Walcher Hochalm Waterfall Trail

Duration: approx. 3 hours (in total)
Starting point: Ferleiten
This tour offers a real treat for the senses – from historic mule tracks to refreshment right behind the waterfall.

The tour at a glance

Starting point/car park: free parking to the right of the Ferleiten kiosk (near Gasthof Tauernhaus)
Route:
- From Gasthof Tauernhaus, a mule track steadily winds its way uphill to the left of the Walcherbach stream.
- After the fork in the path, you cross the stream via a wooden footbridge and reach the Walcher Grundalm pasture (1,580m).
- The route continues westwards across open slopes up to the Walcher Hochalm pasture (1,853m).

The highlight
Shortly after the Walcher Hochalm pasture, the absolute highlight of the hike awaits: the path leads right behind the roaring Walcher waterfall. A unique photo spot and a stunning nature experience!

The way back
The descent follows the Waterfall Trail, which takes you back down into the valley while offering constant views of this natural spectacle.

Fusch High Trail

Difficulty level: easy
Duration: approx. 2-3 hours
Starting point: directly at glockna
If you’re looking for elevation gain, you’ll find it here. The Fusch High Trail winds through a landscape that leaves you speechless. Panoramic views of Hohe Tauern National Park, vistas of glaciers and mountain peaks, and a silence in which you suddenly realise just how noisy everyday life really is. And how good the quiet feels.

Route
You set off just behind the hotel and follow the hiking trail as it runs gently into the valley towards Ferleiten.

Flexibility
The great thing about this route is its variability. The main path leads to Ferleiten in the end of the valley. However, if you don’t want to walk the whole way, you can turn left down into the valley several times to shorten the route (please make sure you follow the official signposts!).

The way back as a circular walk
To avoid having to walk back the same way, we recommend a circular walk:

head up the valley on the sunny side.
take the historic Roman road back, which takes you to the village centre and your starting point at glockna at a leisurely pace, offering wonderful views.

Schmalzgruben Grundalm pasture

Difficulty level: moderate
Duration: approx. 2.5 hours
Starting point: directly at glockna
An idyllic mountain walk that winds its way through dense high-altitude forest and dappled larch groves – perfect for anyone seeking peace and quiet off the beaten track.

Route
From glockna, you set off along the Fusch High Trail and enjoy a leisurely walk into the valley towards Wimmgut. That’s where the climb begins: a trail takes you up through the cool high-altitude forest for about 1.5 hours to the Schmalzgruben Grundalm pasture. Those who want to head even higher can follow the steep mountain path further through sparse larch forests up to the high pasture.

From a stroll through the idyllic Fuscher Tal valley to a high-altitude hike at the foot of the Grossglockner – the trails start right on the doorstep of glockna. Along the way, you’ll come across edelweiss, marmots, and ibex, which aren’t bothered by visitors. And if you’ve worked up an appetite after the climb, rustic huts and modern mountain restaurants serve up regional delicacies that taste better at 2,000 metres above level than anywhere else.
